One of the primary goals of the Association is education, through the encouragement of academic study, cultural exchange, and the presentation of a continuing series of seminars and lectures on contemporary issues affecting relationships between the people and nations of the Western Hemisphere. In addition, the Association maintains three academic scholarships, two of which encourage student achievement in Latin American studies at area colleges and universities and a third which benefits the Performing Arts.Pan American DayOur annual mid-April celebration of the founding of the Organization of American States (OAS). Keynote speakers are generally ranking diplomats from nations of the Western Hemisphere. Annual scholarship awards and other recognition are generally part of this program. Area businesses are encouraged to sponsor student attendance and to contribute to the Association's scholarship endowment funds.
Tribute ReceptionsWe highlight the accomplishments of notable individuals in the region, who have made significant contributions to Panamericanismo. Honorees have generally been natives of the Delaware Valley who have distinguished themselves in representing their community, or the greater interests of the nations of the Western Hemisphere, through community or national service.
Consular ReceptionsWe support and honor members of the diplomatic corps accredited in Philadelphia. The Consular Corps Association of Philadelphia is the oldest, and one of the most active associations of diplomats in the United States. The Pan American Association has forged a strategic alliance with the Consular Corps of Philadelphia, and continues to find ways to strengthen this relationship. One current initiative is to champion the establishment of a "Consul House", to provide a focus for Globalization activities in the Philadelphia area, consisting of trade, academic, social and cultural activities, all supported in a single, multi-purpose facility.
Lectures from U.S. Diplomatic Corps and other government officials Guest speakers have included US Ambassadors, U.S. Military Area Commanders, and Members of Congress.
Tributes to fallen heroes The Annual Carranza Memorial ceremonies in Mount Holly, N.J. honoring the memory of aviation pioneer Captain Emilio Carranza of the Mexican Air Force, a contemporary of Charles Lindbergh, who died while attempting to set a record for air travel between New York and Mexico City.
Academic Awards Financial prizes given to a Junior Year college student to be used for their expenses in their senior year of college. Financial prizes and academic recognition plaques awarded to graduating college seniors, for excellence in studies related to Latin America. Academic recognition awards given to local High School graduates.
Holiday Parties An annual holiday luncheon, celebrating the diverse traditions of Western Hemisphere nations, through song, music and camaraderie.
Cultural events highlighting Latin American artists Art expositions; poetry readings; opera, and more.
