On April 14, 2014, the Pan American Association of Philadelphia will hold its annual Pan American Day and Scholarship Luncheon at the Union League of Philadelphia. Luncheon guests will hear a keynote address by the Mexican Ambassador to the United States, Eduardo Medina Mora. Ambassador Medina Mora has had a distinguished career in the public and private sectors, and has played important roles in international forums and negotiations, including the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) negotiations. In addition, the Association will award two major undergraduate scholarships and recognize graduating senior pursuing Latin American studies at area colleges and universities.
Since its founding in 1940, the Association has been dedicated to promoting cultural, educational and economic activities that increase understanding and cooperation among the peoples of the Americas. The Association is an all-volunteer organization dedicated to advancing Pan-Americanism in the Greater Philadelphia region. Today, the region is home to more than 600,000 residents who trace their roots to Latin America, so the need for greater cultural understanding has become even more relevant.
Please purchase tickets early as we expect a sold-out audience of policymakers and leaders from business, cultural and academic institutions in the greater Philadelphia region with an interest in Pan-Americanism. There will be a networking reception from 11:45 AM – 12:15 PM, with lunch beginning at 12:15 PM and ending promptly at 1:30 PM.
The Pan American Association is pleased to announce that Pennsylvania Governor Tom Corbett and Philadelphia Mayor Michael A. Nutter will welcome attendees and participate in the scholarship award program.
The Mexican Ambassador to the United States, His Excellency Eduardo Medina Mora
Eduardo Medina-Mora was appointed Ambassador of Mexico to the United States of America in January 2013. He previously served as Ambassador of Mexico to the Court of Saint James (United Kingdom. 2009-2012). He has a distinguished career in both the public and private sectors.
He is the only official in history who has held the three top civilian security positions in the Mexican cabinet: Attorney-General (2006-2009), Secretary of Public Security (2005-2006) and Director-General of Mexico’s intelligence agency, the Centre for Investigation and National Security CISEN (2000-2005). During those years, he was also a Member of the National Security Council (2000-2009) and President of the National Public Security Council (2005‐2006). Ambassador Medina-Mora has played important roles in international forums and negotiations.
In the private sector, he was Corporate Director of Strategic Planning and Deputy Director General of DESC Group (1991-2000). He also coordinated the legal advisory group to the Mexican Government during the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) negotiations.
He is a member of Chatham House and the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) among several other associations.
He received his degree in law from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM).
