Scarlett O’Hara went to Brazil
Unhappy with the results of the American Civil War, an estimated 10,000 Confederates moved to Brazil and planted a colony, the town of Santa Barbara, in the state of São Paulo. The Brazilian government sought them in order to develop cotton growing. To this day, descendants, called confederados, maintain traditions and the lore of Southerness. Each year they celebrate their heritage. Notice the Scarlett O’Hara finery of the ladies in the second attachment. One wonders if the confederados retain a Southern accent.
