Season of Protests

University Students Protest in Venezuela

It’s the season of protests, again. While protests in Egypt and Brazil grab attention, Venezuelan university students and faculty are protesting the underfunding of public universities. A total of 18 universities have interrupted academic activities since May because of student and faculty strikes. The authors state: “…the Venezuelan university strikes are about more than just securing higher salaries, benefits, stipends, and study conditions—just like the Brazilian protests are about more than just the cost of transportation. At the core, this is a protest against the status of state-society relations.”
