Brazilians Upset

What Explains the Protests?

In recent days Brazilian cities have witnessed massive protests against the government. Fed by social media the protestors initially responded to the government decision to raise bus fares. Then it mushroomed into a broader attack against official corruption, inattention to the country’s infrastructure, high taxes, “shoddy schools,” and the mega money being spent on the Olympics and the soccer World Cup. The writer comments that the movement has one unifying theme: “an angry, and sometimes violent, rejection of politics as usual.”
