Retreating Peruvian Glaciers

Some bad news. Global warming is reducing the size of the Peruvian glaciers, which are the source of life for indigenous communities at high altitudes—the sierra. Landslides are becoming a threat, while the growing of traditional crops is challenged by disease and water scarcity. Competition for water is already a source of tension in Bolivia. The Peruvian government has set up early warning systems to help protect vulnerable populations. What the long term impact of smaller glaciers on human habitation remains to be seen.
