Why Ecuador?

Snowden Seeks Refuge in Ecuador

Article looks at the reasons that the government of Ecuador might welcome fugitive Edward Snowden. President Rafael Correa (PhD in economics, University of Illinois) has conducted an anti-American foreign policy, while cracking down on the opposition at home. Article posits that by giving sanctuary to Snowden Ecuador seeks a fight with the United States. If indeed Ecuador takes in Snowden it would risk losing the trade preferences by which flowers, asparagus, broccoli, tuna and other products enter the US market duty free. Unless renewed by Congress, those preferences are set to expire by July 31. Will the anti-American foreign policy prevail or will pragmatism?
