The Panama Canal expansion opened on Sunday June 26th, signaling a new era of international commerce. It took nine years and close to $6 billion dollars to almost double the canal’s cargo capacity. It can now accommodate ships large enough to carry 14,000 containers compared with the previous 5,000-container ship maximum.

It has been one of the largest construction projects in the world and has made Panama more competitive with the Suez Canal. Without a doubt, it will affect Western trade for decades to come.

The Pan American Association of Philadelphia is pleased to present a program about this project. The program will be held on August 2, 2016 at the Lincoln Memorial Room of the Union League; it will a luncheon program from 12 noon to 1:45 PM.

Mr. Robert Bright, President and Founder of Talson Solutions will be the main speaker. Mr. Bright is uniquely positioned to provide a clear perspective on this project as his company was the construction auditors for the expansion. He will describe the major components of the expansion and the challenges faced in design and construction.

Ms Georgia Athanasopulos, the Consul General of Panama in Philadelphia, will talk about the impact the expansion will have on the Panamanian people and world trade.
