The pope’s visit to Brazil is focusing attention on the Latin American church, and the competition between Catholics and Protestants. Unlike most commentaries, this article by Eric Farnsworth is upbeat about the state of religion in Latin America. In addition, it’s optimistic about the Pope’s impact. An excerpt: “Even as the United States and European nations race to secularize, Christianity is growing apace across Latin America. At the same time, the Christianity that Latin America increasingly professes is less formal, more socially conscious, and more driven by a yearning to connect directly with the God of the universe.”
