Ecuadorian President in Boston Globe

Rafael Correa

Rafael Correa writes about his government’s achievements to reduce poverty in Ecuador. He is on a tour of the US, looking for opportunities to promote a more positive image as well as engage the support of American universities to advance scientific education in his country. His main point is that there can be no freedom without justice. Correa has a PhD in economics from the University of Illinois. He is also remembered for expelling the American ambassador, evicting the US Agency for International Development, expelling 2 other American officials, and terminating the agreement for access to an Ecuadorian airbase for American counter-narcotics flights. Relations between Washington and Quito have not been good,  a point raised recently in a letter to Correa by American senators.
