Venezuelan Opposition Works for Long Term

President-elect Nicolas Maduro and the late Hugo Chávez

The Christian Science Monitor is one of the few American newspapers with consistently good coverage of Latin America. This report states that the election of last Sunday gave the opposition good prospects for the future. Moreover, in order to avoid conflict in the streets the government controlled electoral council has agreed to recount all the votes. While a reversal of Maduro’s “victory” is unlikely, the opposition is pointing to municipal elections later this year and beyond. Therefore the election result is encouraging for the opposition, which lost by a small margin of 1.6%.
